The Lord's Supper
One of the things we've struggled with at RBCC is how to incorporate communion into the life of the church. We all know how important it is biblically and how crucial it was to the first church.
Growing up in the Southern Baptist church, we took communion about once a quarter. When I first started to plant/pastor and after studying Acts I became convinced that communion should be done more frequently than that. (Mars Hill does it every service).
We have tried to incorporate the Lord's Supper into some of our Sunday services but we ran into a couple of problems: our theatre setting is not good for serving communion to a large crowd; what about the number of unbelievers/unchurched who are present? and for me, it sort of slowed down the pace of the service and for us ... pace on Sunday (our main event) is important.
Our recent attempt at being faithful to the Scriptures and practice of the first church regarding communion is to institute a new service on the First Wednesday of the month (similiar to Perry Noble and New Spring). This will be (we hope), a regular time for us to fellowship, worship, pray, and observe the Lord's Supper. Last night was our first 1st Wednesday and it was awesome with passionate worship, prayer, and a reflective time of observing the Lord's Supper.
Strategically, this hopefully will help us "make disciples" or "keep those we are reaching" by creating another environment that takes people a little deeper in encountering the risen Christ in a corporate setting.
I don't know if anyone else struggles with this ... if you do and have another solution/approach, I'd love to hear it.
